Creatures

These are the creatures that can be found in our Weyr.

Fire-Lizards ~ Fire-Lizards, also called flits, flitters, or 'lizards, are one of the most wanted pets on Pern. These mini-dragons can sit on your shoulder and do an assortment of things for you including, but not limited to: retrieving small objects, delivering written messages, spying, and pestering people. Flits come in the same colors as dragons except that they Impress to whomever gives them food. They Impress regardless of gender (ex: a Gold may Impress a male or a Bronze to a female). Flits mate in flights and lay clutches that are smaller than dragon clutches.

Runnerbeasts ~ (aka: Runners) On Earth these creatures are called Horses. They were origionally brought to Pern with the first colonists. Of course, their name was forgotten over time so the Pernese just made up a name. Runnerbeasts are not well kept like they are on Earth, they are shaggy and ungroomed. They come in the same colors as they do on Earth (black, white, roan, paint, etc.). Runnerbeasts only mate when their owners let them. They usually give birth to one foal, two at the most but this is extreamly rare. Runners tend to be rather expensive so if you own one of your own you might be considered wealthy by some.

Canines ~ On Earth these creatures are called Dogs. They were origionally brought to Pern for companionship. They come in many breeds and have many uses. Canines come in the same colors as they do on Earth (black, white, brown, mixed, etc.). They only mate when their owners want them too. They usually have litters of 1-10 puppies.

Felines ~ Brought to Pern by humans as companions. They are housecats and their share the same attributes and colors as Earthen cats. Felines aren't very common but when they are found they are normally kept to help catch TunnelSnakes. They have litters usually containing 1-8 kittens.

Wild Felines ~ A large, wild version of Felines. They are similar to the big cats of Earth. The DRoP books are not specific about the particular breed of these animals but it is thought that they are genetically enhanced Cheetahs (mixed with either lions and/or tigers) because they can run at amazing speeds and they have retractable claws. Wild Felines are dangerous and will attack humans and even dragons. They are very deadly. Wild Felines hunt and live in large packs that normally roam through the plains. Occasionally, they will stumble across a bunch of Herdsbeast and begin to slaughter them. It is at this time that DragonRiders are called in to hunt the Felines. Wild Felines can come in a variety of natural colors. They can be tamed but it is very rare and even once tame Felines have been known to turn on their owners.

Watch-Whers ~ Called Whers for short. Whers are kin to the dragon and fire-lizards. All information was once forgotten about these creatures and is now being learned again mainly because of the need for Whers in the deep dark caverns of the new Weyrs and Holds. Kitti Ping's daughter, Wind Blossom, created these creatures when she tried to improve apon her mother's dragons. Whers are smaller than dragons and are more muscular, so muscular that they are kind of scary to look at. Their eyes are large and many faceted because Wind Blossom tried to smooth the eyes out. It was once thought that Wher eyes were too powerful to be used in daylight when in truth they see heat images instead of normal ones. This is why they cannot go out in daylight because everything looks the same to them, all one shade of heat. Whers were also thought to be flightless and incapable of going between but this too was proved wrong, though it seems Whers can only fly at night when they air is thicker. Whers do not mate in the air as their dragon kin do. Whers do Impress though unlike dragons when their handler dies they can be re-Impressed. Whers kind of name themselves. The Whers actually take part of their Handler's name into theirs and add an 'sk' to the end. The names become more and more similar as the handler and Wher's bond grows closer. For example, say the handler's name was Myran, at first the Wher would be named Mysk, then Myrsk, then Myrask, and finially Myransk. Only people who have been recomended by their Weyr or Hold can Impress a Wher. Whers come in the same colors as dragons. They probably won't be a large part of our roleplay, but I thought I'd list them.

Prismavians ~ (created by Padplant) These birds are called Prismavians, or Mavians, because these birds' feathers are transparent. They look plain in the dark, but when the light hits their feathers, it refracts into dazzling colored light, different colors of light for each type. Their beaks are very long and thin, and they sport big, showy crests at the back of their heads. The Mavians have a bit of empathy, which gives them a special ability. They are able to take emotional 'snapshots' of how someone is feeling, and give the 'snapshot' to someone else. So if someone's emotions are hard to put into words, a Mavian can be used to communicate them. Like dragons and flits, they Impress at Hatching, and can Impress to anyone. When it comes time for a female to mate, all the males gather around and display their plumage in the sunlight. She mates with whichever male has the most pleasing light display. Colors:

Rainbow | Aqua | Flame | Night | Royal | Bright | Albino

Rainbow: When the sunlight hits the feathers of a Rainbow, it refracts into every color, creating a dazzling display. Even though, as far as Mavians go, they aren't very intelligent, they are the largest of them all and lay clutches of about 10. They are sassy, spunky Mavians that aren't afraid to use their long beaks. From beak tip to tail tip, they are the size of a child's arm. Their favorite birdcall is "Kchakchakchak!"

Aqua: The Aquas display cascades of blue and green light in the light of Rukbat. At the size of 3/4 the length of a child's arm, they are almost as large as Rainbows, albeit a little smarter. These proud males are extremely competitive, and it is perhaps for this reason that they so often catch the eyes of Rainbows when they show off their plumage. Their favorite birdcall is "Tseeeer!"

Flame: Sometimes Flames look like they are burning when they step into the light, because their feathers make sunlight turn red, orange, and yellow. They are the size of the average forearm, but have a temper the size of a man's whole body, especially when guarding their clutches, even though they only lay 1 - 3 eggs. Their favorite birdcall is "Cheep!"

Night: The feathers of Nights turn light into dark, for they refract the sun's rays into purple and black light, if it can even be called light. They are broody males, recluses even, that mostly keep to their owners and distrust other humans, even other Mavians. They are the size of a child's forearm, but still are sometimes able to catch the eyes of Rainbows. Nonetheless, they mainly end up with Flames, and with Royals from time to time. Their favorite birdcall is "Hoot...hoot..."

Royal: Even if Royals are completely sterile, they look like the greatest Mavians of them all, because their feathers turn the light red and gold. They definitely act like royalty, with an attitude to match, even though they're half the size of an adult's forearm. Even though they are insufferably arrogant, they are extremely loyal to their owners - or subjects, as they like to think of them. Their favorite birdcall is "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"

Bright: Instead of turning sunlight into a different color, the feathers of Brights make the sunlight even brighter, making them flare to blinding brilliance at the sun's zenith. Even though they are stunningly beautiful, these males are quiet and shy. When they do open up, they are very sweet. They are only half the size of a child's forearm, so they usually mate with Royals, but sometimes a Flame. Their favorite birdcall is "Cluck, cluck."

Albino: Albinos are extremely rare and are the only Mavian with opaque feathers. Their snowy white feathers do not refract light, and their red eyes are eerie. They are also extremely tiny, being able to fit in the palm of a hand. They can be male or female and only mate with each other. While females lay a single egg, it is almost always a dud. On the off chance it does hatch, it is always another Albino. They are by far the most intelligent Mavians, cleverer than any firelizard as well. Their favorite birdcall is "Tweet!"
